Located at 1834 altitude metres Kehlsteinhaus is a unique monument of architectural and contemporary history. Finished in 1938 it still impressively depicts the megalomaniac NS ideology. Several thousand workers were employed for almost two years in order to realise this mammoth project in rough terrain and with considerable logistic effort. From Kehlsteinhaus a 124 metre tunnel leads straight down into the rock. It serves as the shaft for a brass-plated elevator which was originally intended to let Hitler comfortably reach his abode at the summit. But he himself only came very sporadically. In order to get a closer look at the historic relationships a visit at Dokumentation Obersalzberg is recommendable.
